Learning Log 7

This performance had taught me that without teamwork, success is practically impossible to achieve. We had to meet up a few times or should I say, a lot of times to discuss about the performance. We discussed about things like the props that will be used, the costumes and to rehearse. I am grateful that the performance went great and smooth despite small errors made. When my group was performing, I felt very nervous as the performance was recorded and it will take up 70% of our End-Of-Year results for literature. Not only that, there were audience watching our performance but despite feeling nervous, I think that my acting was not so bad. I can also see that other groups such as 2 Commitment group 1, who had the theme "Bollywood" did very well. If I can improve my group's performance, I would want the group to memorise their lines better. Qian Qi and Ruth had forgotten some of their lines during the performance itself and if I can improve my group's performance, I would make them memorise their lines better. I would recommend my juniors to have this performance as it would improve their public speaking skills and help them interact better with their friends.

Learning Log 6

In secondary one, we learnt some literary devices for literature last year. This year, we will learn more literary devices. The literary devices we will learn is harder than last year. For example, things like "rhetorical question" and "hyperbole" are something that i have not heard of before. For the end of year examination, we will be tested on literary devices. This means that we would have to memorise them.

There will be a section in the end of year paper where there is an unseen poem and there is a lot of literary devices and we would have to identify them and explain what the writer is trying to say by using the literary device.

An example of a literary device is repetition. It means using a word or phrase multiple times, in order to give emphasis and show strong feelings. An example of a repetition is "Go! Go! Go!".

Learning Log 5

I have learnt that an "unseen" poem is a poem that we have not read before. To approach the poem, we have to read the poem at least twice. The first time when we read the poem, we read it without stopping. The second time, we read it and pick out difficult words and phrases. We need to work out the difficult words and phrases before we read it again but this time slower and giving more attention to the difficult words. We also have to take down our feelings and where our attention is drawn to. We need to make notes on the poem. The notes on the poem have to be short but clear.

I have learnt how to approach and Unseen prose passage. Similar to the way to approach and unseen poem, the first time we read it, we have to read it without stopping and we have to note down difficult words and phrases. The second time, we must have a greater understanding about the characters and what is going on in the poem. Other than that, we have to observe the setting and the mood of the passage. For the third reading, we have to take a look at the questions on the text.

Learning Log 4

Through the performance, I have learnt that teamwork is a very important factor to a successful play or act. Without teamwork, an act or play will never be successful as if only a few of the group members are contributing on the act, the act will not look good. Other than teamwork, efforts and rehearsals are also very important.
Overall, I think that all the groups did well. I thought that the first group that performed last Thursday during literature lesson did very well as their props were very nicely done and their voice were close to a witch's voice. My group's performance did not so bad in the beginning but towards the ending, I was a bit too slow. However, I was satisfied with my group's performance as I have tried my best to make the performance a success.
Even though I was satisfied with my group's performance, there are still some areas of improvements. I think that my group can improve on the timing of the performance itself. The voices of my group members and myself was also not so bad, but if possible, make the voice even more high pitched, like a witch's voice.

Learning Log 3

Mrs Woo, my literature teacher, used her "Number Selector" to select our groups for the act of the Three Witches of Macbeth. I think that the idea she came up with to pick our groups; "Number Selector", is quite fair as we do not know who our groupmates are. I was very lucky as my group members were Mark and Chung Seng. They are quite close to me and their presentation skills are good. Overall, i am quite satisfied with who I am working with for the presentation.
For the group discussion on the comic strips, we had to discuss on what to draw for the comic strips on Act 1 Scene 2 of the Three Witches of Macbeth. I decided to draw 5 boxes, rather than 7 as i think there are only 5 important parts. The sentences my groupmates came up with were quite interesting. Because of the sentences they wrote, I changed some of my sentences as I thought that their's were better.
For the lessons on Act 1 Scene 2, I was quite confused as there are quite a lot of things to remember; some quotations and the plot of the story. To be honest, even when I asked some of my classmates about the lessons , they told me that they themselves did not understand what Mrs Woo was talking about. In my opinion, I think that Mrs Woo went too fast for the lessons. Then, right before the common test, I kept reading and reading the text until I fully understood the text. I felt very relief after i had fully understood the text but unfortunately, I had forgotten to memorise the quotations.

Learning Log 2

Last few lessons, me and some of my other classmates were chosen to demonstrate act 1 scene 1 of the Three Witches of MacBeth. We demonstrated three times where each time, three students demonstrate. We had to read out the script with emotions but some of my classmates did not read it out with emotions but they had tried and it was obvious that they had put in effort for their demonstration. Although they tried their best, they still have a lot of rooms for improvement.

I hav to admit, from the start of the year, for literature, this is one of the most interesting work I had to complete. I was amazed at how many different superstitions there are, and i am unaware of most of them. Although i do not believe in superstitions, I would not want to get involved in any of the bad ones like crossing a black cat's path. Some of the superstitions spooked me out too.

I was surprised at some of the superstitions my classmates had came up with. It was very interesting. I am also very curious at how the superstitions are made as some were unreasonable. The presentations by my classmates made me want to find out more about the superstitions. After that Wednesday, i have been researching on the superstitions that i had found out from my classmates during the presentation.

Learning Log 1

I have learned how to write the cinquain poem itself. A cinquain poem is a five lined poem in which the first line consists of one word which is the title, the second line consists of 2 words which are descriptions, the third line consists of 3 words which are actions and must end with the "-ing", the fourth line consists of four words which are feelings and the last line, which is the fifth line, consists of a one word reflection of the title.

For the lesson, we had a group work. Our task is to complete a cinquain poem. The group work helped me to interact better with my classmates and improve on my poem-writing skills. I also learned that i have to respect other people's ideas even if the ideas are stupid and not laugh at the ideas they have contributed.

Give us a hard copy of past years better cinquain poems so that we can learn from them and improve on our own cinquain poems.
